Day in the Life

A Day in the Life: Cain Watson

Cain Watson Tandem Alum

Ever wonder what it’s like to work at Tandem? In this series, we’re taking a peek into the everyday life of Tandem’s product designers and software engineers.

Morning

At 8:00 my alarm first wakes me up. I then proceed to snooze it 3-10 times before finally getting out of bed. I make breakfast and then stretch before starting the day.

9:30 a.m.

I get started around 9:30, taking the first 30 minutes to get my bearings for what I’m doing that day. I check my calendar, emails, Trello, and GitHub. I also like to keep Slack closed during this time to help me stay focused and avoid getting stressed out by notifications in the morning.

10 a.m.

I first make a quick change to a pull request I created last week and push up the changes. I then finish up a ticket I started on Friday. I started implementing it one way but thought of an easier way this morning. Oh, what a fresh mind does! 🙂

11:30 a.m.

I attend the daily standup meeting with our client and the team, where I give updates and hear from the product managers on upcoming work we’ll need to do.

Noon

It’s time for Lightning Round with the rest of the company! I really like seeing everyone’s faces and appreciate having the hard stop for lunch and a much-needed break.

For lunch today, I cooked a very yummy veggie burger. I watch an episode of Tuca and Bertie while I eat. After the show, I complete a few lessons on Duolingo before heading back to work.

1 p.m.

On Monday afternoons, we have a retro with the client’s development team. We had some productive conversations about how to improve sprint planning for another workstream and created some action steps. I’m looking forward to how it plays out at the end of the week!

3 p.m.

It’s pairing time with Mia, who recently joined our project! We work on a ticket from the backlog we discussed during standup and finish it pretty quickly.

4:51 p.m.

Before ending the day, I meet with our development lead on the project, Matt. I usually sync with him on what I’ve been working on and what I plan on working on tomorrow. Since he’s on the west coast, he still has a few more hours left in the day to do things like code review or pick up a ticket I left for the day. It’s 4:51 pm when the call ends. I close Slack and any other apps I don’t need open for tomorrow morning and then log off.

After Work

I need a break from screens, so I go on a run. When I get back, I take a shower before hopping on a call with some friends to watch an episode of Tales from the Loop.
