Day in the Life

A Day in the Life: Lin Lin

Lin Lin Design Manager

Ever wonder what it’s like to work at Tandem? In this series, we’re taking a peek into the everyday life of Tandem’s product designers and software engineers.

Morning

Ideally, I wake up around 6:20am. In real life, I hit snooze at least twice and reluctantly get out of bed around 6:40am. After getting my kids off to school, I usually space out for 15 minutes with a hot cup of tea. Depending on the weather that day, I may go running or do a boxing workout with my Oculus Quest 2.

8:30 a.m.

I start checking my Slack messages around 8:30am. I tend to check the #project and #sales-delivery channels first. One of my favorite non-project related channels is #watercooler, where a random question is posted every day. I just love reading through everyone’s answers. It gives us a chance to get to know each other despite working remotely.

10 a.m.

At 10am, my day REALLY starts. It’s usually meetings, meetings, meetings! Today, I have a 1:1 with Eli where we talk about wins and challenges. If it’s Thursday, then at 10:30am we have Design Crit. This is a special time for the whole design team to get together and give each other feedback on projects we are currently working on. Each Design Crit meeting has a fun theme. Some notable ones include: The Real Housewives, Penguins, and Planets (Justice for Pluto!).

Noon

I really look forward to Lightning Round, which occurs at noon almost everyday. It’s a time where the whole company hops on a Google Meet and everyone gives an update on what we’ve learned, what we need help with, or one positive thing we have to share that day. I love it when one person brings up a particularly interesting topic and we continue the conversation in the meeting chat.

I like to make nourishing foods during lunch to help me get through the afternoon. I’ve been loving warm chicken soup with scallions and kale stir-fry that is topped with a sunny-side-up egg. On days I don’t make lunch, I tend to order Thai food. My favorite is Pad Woon Sen with shrimp!

1 p.m.

After lunch, I usually attend more meetings. One of Tandem’s core values is collaboration. We put a lot of effort into living that truth. Working in tandem helps us think divergently when we need to explore, and converge when we have a chosen concept to refine. The time we spend in pairing truly spikes my creativity.

3 p.m.

At 3pm, I usually have my last meeting of the day. If I am not in a meeting, I look at the tasks I have set out to do in the day, and see if there’s anything I need to complete before the end of the day. Today, my last meeting was pairing with McKenzie and Amy to work on the e-Security user journey. I love wrapping up my day with a good pairing session.

Late afternoon/evening

I don’t have a definitive end time. Some days I wrap up early while other days I keep working past 5pm. Tandem gives us the flexibility and trust to work at our own pace. As long as the work gets done, our time is at our disposal. Recently, I started a ritual to celebrate overcoming a challenging day — I order an Oolong bubble tea with milk cap at 75% sweetness and enjoy it after I shut off my computer. Delicious and a nice way to put a bow on all the hard work!

After Work

After work, I check in with my kids. We chat about what happened during our day, talk about what we want for dinner, and sometimes we drink our hard-earned bubble teas together.

This was a very typical day. Work-life balance is very important to me, and today was the ideal mix of tempos.
